Special fuses are used in inverters, you can try to look up High Speed IGBT Fuses, for a protection method used in DC banks supplying power to IGBT based inverters. These can save the IGBT from exploding, but maybe not from damage, see it more as a fire/shrapnel protection device, than IGBT saver.
