Tesla coil DRSSTC IGBT explosion. 12 days before a show, panic!

The 60N60 IGBT full-bridge exploded during a small test of playing MIDI on the DRSSTC. I upgraded it to a SKM200GB123 bricks. DRSSTC IGBT explosions are no joke, 12 days before a show.

Can you guess the song that was played?

DRSSTC IGBT explosion is properly a bit much to say. It was a silent death during a MIDI playback, once power is turned back on, the bridge short circuits and burns outs.

I quickly changed it to a SKM200GB123 inverter bridge that I had around. It was built for another experimental project, hence why it is a little crude.

It took 3-4 evenings/nights to locate all the faults, replace parts and get it running again. I am happy.

Learn how to build your own Tesla coil. Learn how to make it play music through a MIDI interrupter that can connect a computer to your Tesla coil. To play music from just the sparks alone. It can be a hard start to build a Tesla coil if you have no prior experience in doing so. I recommend that you watch my video on how I learned to build Tesla coils. And the history of how I started by building small Tesla coils up to my very large Tesla coil that can make 4 meter long sparks.

Besides the guide that I have listed here above, I have also developed a good deal of tools that can help you design and check if your components can be used in a Tesla coil. It is important to stay within the physical and electrical limits of the components, else you are at great risk of damaging them. Tesla coils are pushing the components beyond their specifications, in order to get the longest sparks for the least amount of money.
